Summer beard care on the Costa del Sol: a practical guide

Este artículo también está disponible en español.

Summer on the Costa del Sol is tough on a beard: heat, sweat, sea salt, pool chlorine and plenty of sun. With a few simple habits you can keep it neat, comfortable and itch-free. These are the tips we give at Sir Franklin Monasterios, in Riviera del Sol (Mijas Costa).

1. Clean it gently

After the beach or the pool, rinse it with fresh water to remove salt and chlorine. Wash it with a mild beard shampoo, without scrubbing hard. A harsh soap dries out both the hair and the skin underneath.

2. Moisturise it every day

Heat and sun dry out hair and skin alike. A light beard oil or balm, in small amounts, helps keep it soft and prevents itching. In summer it is best to use light products that do not feel greasy.

3. Keep its shape with regular trims

A well-shaped beard looks tidy even in the heat. Book a professional trim every 7 to 10 days to keep the shape and the lines clean, especially on the neck and cheeks.

4. Look after the skin underneath

The skin on your face suffers in the sun too. Apply sunscreen to the areas the beard does not cover, moisturise, and if you notice tightness or flaking, keep cleaning and softening it regularly.

5. Mistakes to avoid

  • Drying it with very hot air, which dries out the hair.
  • Using too much product: it builds up and feels dirty.
  • Trimming it at home without a guide and ending up with uneven lines.
  • Neglecting the neck and cheeks, which define the shape the most.
